Nestled into the east side of the Mayacmas Mountains in Lake County California, lies Black Rock Ranch and Cougar’s Leap Winery. Well fed herds of deer yield hearty cougars. Head trained vines and volcanic soils yield hearty wines.
In 1995 the Johnson Family began planting grapes at Black Rock Ranch. At that time there were only a few other growers in the Red Hills Region. The volcanic soils in this area are suitable for red varietals, so the choice was made to plant Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.
